INTRODUCTIONS

LECTURES

Refer to Task 1:Exploration

1. Recap of Task 3 brief
After analyzing the design selected in Task 2, you should create a design work by being inspired or influenced by the analyzed design. I have to apply knowledge of design principles to your creation. Finally, submit a Link to Task 2. Also, Link to Task 3. Link to Task 3 and the final design from Task 3.

2. Visual reference
First, I decided to make a work using a paper collage, the main technique of the work analyzed in Task 2. To materialize the idea of making a paper collage, I thought about the subject, message, or desired artistic effect and looked for visual conferences.

The theme is "de-consumerist society" with the message "Responsible Consumption and Production" from SDG12.

3. Sketches ( I sketched by adobe fresco)
Material collection: I went to a bookstore for a collage and bought a magazine to collect materials that fit my topic.

-Sketch 1
Fig 2.2 Sketch 1- "Viewing the Reality of OverConsumption through Colored Glasses"
Intended design principles: Symbol, Emphasis

The title means looking at the consumerist world through sunglasses, limiting the perspective on consumption to a limited perspective. This can reveal awareness of the problem of overconsumption and highlight the problems that arise in consumer culture due to prejudice or narrow-minded thinking.
It represents the design principle by emphasizing relatively large sunglasses and placing other elements in a balanced manner. The sunglasses symbolize a narrow view.

-Sketch 2
Fig 2.3 Sketch 2- "Sustainable Humans are not detected"
Intended design principles: Repetition, Word and Image, Contrast, Emphasis

This title exposes the reality that busy modern people are not adopting sustainable consumption and lifestyles and highlights the problem that everyone is over-consuming. As a result, it delivers a message that emphasizes the need for sustainable living.
Repeating human images, the color of the square box represents contrast and emphasis using red, which contrasts with black and white human images.

-Sketch 3
Fig 2.5 Sketch 4- "Caution: Consumerist Mirage, Beware!"

Intended design principles: Word and Image, Balance
This title expresses the world of consumption as an unrealistic fantasy and contains warnings and cautions about consumption. The design principle is represented through the word caution and a collage balanced along the diagonal.

Finally, I decided to proceed with Sketch 2.

5.  Explaining My Design

Title: "Sustainable Humans are Not Detected"(2024)
Material: Paper, Collage
Size: A4 size (210mm x 297mm)
Design Principle: Repetition, Word and Image, Contrast, Emphasis

I created "Sustainable Humans are Not Detected" (2024), a piece that expresses my chosen SDG goal of 12 "Responsible consumption and production" using a paper collage, a technique that Marianne Williams often uses.

Using Fashion magazine, GRAZIA's February 2024 issue encourages post-consumerism through luxury brands, symbolizing human excess. Hands reaching for desires like Chanel's Coco Crush ring convey unchecked consumption, juxtaposed with warnings about brands like Cartier and Maserati. The message was that I had to stop spending the other hand holding that hand.

The artwork unfolds chronologically, depicting nature's degradation from top to bottom. A sea fire represents human-induced environmental harm, with humans depicted on a screen but absent in reality, highlighting disconnection. This unrestrained desire perpetuates an unsustainable environment, urging viewers to consume responsibly.

Overall, the painting uses stark color contrast, with blue dominating the top, red appearing at the bottom, and emphasizing each other with sharp shapes. Throughout its composition, human figures, rectangular boxes, and Internet alerts are repeated, with the words "bag, Take over?/ 20k followers, zero personality/ human not detected" referring to a particular photo succinctly conveying its intended message.

Word count: 187 words.

FEEDBACK

Week 6: Sketch 2 is a good idea to proceed with the work. Make sure you understand the paper collage and make a collage with more than 10 elements

Week 7: Good enough, put your further reading and increase the amount of the design principles a little more.

REFLECTION

Experience:
While creating the final artwork of design principles, I went through an interesting journey by experiencing firsthand how design principles are applied to the work. Making paper collages allowed me to think again about consumerism, which I was usually interested in. In the beginning, I thought that the work would be difficult, but I was able to work happily while applying design principles, which has become an unforgettable learning experience for me.

Observation:
In the process of designing the work, various aspects of consumerism were observed and considered through a paper collage. Consumerism is pointed out as a problem that goes beyond the boundaries of unnecessary consumption and consumption culture in modern society. While making a paper collage, I was able to gain a deep understanding of it by visually expressing how consumerism affects our lives and environment. Through the work, we tried to present a critical perspective on consumerism, and this served as an opportunity to think about the role and meaning of consumption to the audience.

Findings:
The conclusion I got from making a paper collage is that design can be used to draw criticism and discussion on social issues beyond just making beautiful works. By visually conveying the understanding and criticism of consumerism through the work, I realized the possibility of conveying the social message through the power of design. This experience instilled confidence in me that design can play an important role in bringing about social change, and I will create works that promote discussion on social issues and lead to social change in future works.

Before starting collage art, I looked for materials to study about paper collages and learn how to make them.

This data was helpful in the task by organizing the type of collage, what to do when you start making it, and the total process in an easy-to-understand manner.
