Lectures 1 to 6 completed in Task 1:Exploration

VISUAL ANALYSIS

1. Recap of Task 2 brief
The existing art/design works selected in Task 1 should be evaluated, investigated, documented, and analyzed.
To do this,  Study the design principles found in the work and the design's size, layout, purpose, and effect on the UNSDG goals I selected. Finally, write a 300-350 word visual analysis of the selected design.

2. Visual analysis for the selected design

1. Observation
This design artwork takes the form of a collage. At the center, a man is holding a perfume in difficulty. The vibrant flowers surrounding him add color and vitality to the scene in stark contrast to the muted tones of the background. Below the central figure is another man holding a gun in a threatening manner, the surprised expression of the woman observing the scene. Overall, the collage has a monotonous background but a color contrast between colorful flowers and a vivid perfume interior.

2. Analysis
The design of the painting indicates the principles of Gestalt psychology, such as similarity, proximity, and closure. Similar colors and expressions shared by the man holding the perfume and perfume create visual groups that emphasize the relevance. Also, the proximity of the man in the painting and their connections can be seen as examples of proximity. The combination of the perfume inside the bottle and the man holding the perfume forms the complete image of closure. The contrast between the monotonously expressed background colorful perfume and flowers stands out. And the image of a man with an object called perfume in the center and holding it high looks symbolic. There is also an emphasis on using colors and locations. His high posture and colored perfume bottle draw more attention.

3. Interpretation

Image A: ‘Wфmen Against Fascism’ by Marian Williams (2022)
Image B: Love; Natalie and Tab by Marian Williams (2024)

Contemporary Dutch artist Marianne Williams showcases her collage work by utilizing environmentally innovative recyclable materials, original photos, and vintage illustrations (Kasini House, 2015).  Her work, Eau de l'Héros (2020), reflects her creativity and environmentally mindful approach, just like her other works (Image A&B). Eau de l'Héros" is a work created using original images from 1960s magazines and creatively expresses William's artistic vision to transform the importance of sustainable preservation and better preservation and sustainable lifestyle within a pervasive type (Artmajeur, 2024). These works created using a technique called a paper collage, represent the problems of the modern era that the artist thinks or the environmental and artistic freedom to express his or her thoughts. FEEDBACK

Week 4: Name each paragraph and find and interpret the work of the same artist or another artist with a similar feeling in the Interpretation section.

Week 5: Bold words you think are important, and mark a quotation after the quoted part.

REFLECTION

Experience:
I followed three systematic steps to finally analyze the design I chose. I first observed the picture itself, looked at what design elements were present, and then analyzed where the design theory was used according to the design theory. Finally, I looked for two more paintings by artists similar to or similar to the one I chose, looked at related articles, and progressed with the professor's feedback every week.

Observation:
During visual analysis, I gained a deeper understanding of the artist and could appreciate the artwork more profoundly. Simultaneously, by engaging in critical thinking, I grasped the true essence of visual analysis.
As a result, I feel I'm progressing towards making the design principles I learned in previous projects entirely my own. This deeper comprehension allows me to apply these principles more effectively and creatively in my work.

Findings:
The realization that visual analysis is a systematic process has been truly enlightening for me. Initially, I perceived it as a simple task of analyzing elements and interpreting them on the spot, perhaps by considering the data or background of the work. However, I've come to understand that it involves a much more intricate and methodical approach.
This newfound understanding has significantly bolstered my design thinking ability. By recognizing the systematic nature of visual analysis, I've been able to delve deeper into the intricacies of design, considering factors such as design principles, context, and artist background in a more structured manner.
