Week1 - 01 Culture & Design
Q1.Why do visual graphics exist?
-> I think Visual graphics exist for several reasons.
One of the reasons for Visual graphics exist is to convey information clearly and concisely.
They help simplify complex concepts and make data more understandable to a wider audience.
Next, Visual graphics can enhance the aesthetic appeal of a presentation, document, or website.
They can make content more visually appealing and create a more enjoyable user experience.
Q2. Why do they look the way they do?
-> As for why visual graphics look the way they do, it depends on Purpose, Medium, Audience, etc.
Visuals = Everything that can be seen & Everything produced or created by humans that can be seen
-Design Significance:
The lecture template analyzed the design significance of the Nature Republic brand, so I newly analyzed the design significance of the Blue Bottle myself.
-Design System:
-Design Sensitivity: Cultural sensitivity in design goes beyond aesthetics; it also encompasses functionality, usability, and the overall user experience.
Symbolism and Imagery: Certain symbols and images may carry different meanings in different cultures. Designers should be mindful of potential cultural interpretations to avoid unintentional misunderstandings or offenses.
Color Considerations: Colors can have cultural significance, and their meanings may vary across different societies. Understanding the cultural associations of colors can help designers make appropriate choices.
Typography and Language: Choosing fonts and text styles that are culturally appropriate is important. Additionally, considering language variations and ensuring accurate translations is crucial for reaching diverse audiences.
-----------------------
Addressing Cultural SensitivityInclusive Design: Designers should strive to create products and experiences that are accessible and inclusive for people from various cultural backgrounds, including those with different abilities and needs.
User Research: Conducting thorough user research, including ethnographic studies and user testing across diverse groups, helps designers gain insights into cultural preferences and behaviors.
Localization: Adapting designs to specific cultural contexts through localization can enhance the relevance and acceptance of a product or service.
Cultural Awareness Training: Design teams may benefit from cultural awareness training to develop a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives and sensitivities.
TEAM PROCESS
We made a WhatsApp group on the day we made the team and met the following Monday for a meeting and talked about our ideas.
THEME: "Cultural Sensitivity in Design"
SUMMARY:To study and research topics that discuss the given theme. With the information gathered from a chosen topic, students should produce a presentation slide that includes the following; a 200-word rationale (with citation), 3 sketches detailing preliminary ideas, and any sources, references, and credits used should be included as well.
PROCESS: In our first group meeting, each of us came up with a brief introduction on the topics of our choosing. Through this discussion, a few factors were considered before making our final decision.
The topic should relate to the theme given.
Information should be convenient and within our reach.
Data can be collected physically.
Research is broad and not limited.
With these factors in mind, we chose Korean art called "Mother of Pearl Inlay/나전칠기(Najeonchilgi)".
We were intrigued by the beauty of such tradition, the process of creation as well as the element used to sustain this design practice. Then, once the topic was decided on, tasks were distributed amongst the group equally and accordingly.

I decided on a theme in lacquerware and found related YouTube videos and images to help all team members understand the theme and shared them on WhatsApp.
In the first week, the process of designing by considering the cultures of various countries while contemplating design sensitivity was very interesting. Understanding each country's cultural characteristics and values and reflecting them in its design was a great challenge, but at the same time, it was a very rewarding experience. In this process, I realized the importance of intercultural interaction in person, and I was able to take a deeper look at how it affects design.
Observation:
Exploring the cultures of different countries while working on the design considering cultural sensitivity was a great inspiration. In the process of developing a design by considering various aspects, such as art, food, and traditions of each country, we were able to discover the uniqueness and beauty of that country. This observation presented new ideas and approaches for better design and also helped us to have a deeper understanding of diversity.
Findings:
Through this experience, I was able to clearly understand the impact of cultural sensitivity on design. Conducting design with consideration of various cultures provides opportunities to increase creativity as a designer and provide users with more meaningful experiences. In addition, I realized that through intercultural interaction, I can increase my understanding of design from a global perspective and improve my competitiveness in the global market.
